Dear Mr Smith,

I was so pleased to hear from you and am writing to tell you something about my village. Quite a few changes have taken place im my village, through which runs a small river with a stone bridge over it. There are new houses along the southern bank of the river. Beside the houses there is a playground where the villagers often play ball games after farm work. There is a new school which is to the south of the playground and a library to the east of the school. Also there are rice fields near the houses. A toy factory lies on the northern bank of the river. Beyond it is an orchard where all kinds of fruit are grown.

The villagers here are living a happy life. I hope you'll come and see for yourself some day.

    Best wishes.
                                        yours
                                       Wang Ming

A student is learning to speak British English. He wonders: Can I communicate with Americans? Can they understand me? Learners of English often ask: What are the differences between British ansd American English? How important are these differences?

Certainly, there are some differences between British and American English. There are a few differences in grammar. For example, speakers of British say "in hospital" and "Have you a pen?" American say "in the hospital" and "Do you have a pen?" Pronuciation is sometimes different. Americans usually sound the r's in words like "bird" and "hurt". Some speakers of British English do not sound the r's in these words. There are differences between British and American English in spelling and vocabulary. For example, "colour"and "honour"are British. "color" and "honor"are American.

These differences in grammar, pronuciation, spelling, and vocabulary ate not important, however. For the most part,British and American English are the same language.
